The Wild Moon by Riley Storm

Chapter Fifty-Four

Peace.

The feeling flooded me instantly as the golden bond split apart, the ends of it beginning to blacken even as the force of the spear slicing them sent the two ends fluttering up into the air.

Pain receded next. Giving me some clarity. I could see the room again, still lit by the bursting, crackling energy that was still being absorbed by me, somehow.

What was this place? What did it mean?

My attention was focused on the very Soulbond itself. I hadn’t realized it was an actual thing. A tangible line between the two of us, but now, as I watched the blackness work its way toward me, the entire thing happening in slow motion, I knew without a doubt I’d made the right choice.

A life of loneliness was better than the alternative. This was what I’d needed to do.

I watched the line die, waiting for it to reach me.

Finally.

Once it did, I would have no hope of ever having a mate again. And I would be free. At last. Of everyone. Of everything.

It continued to shrivel, and I heard myself exhale in relief.

It was over. At long last, my fight was over.

Johnathan. Lars. Whatever Aaron was. Vir. Even the temple and the energy still swirling around. None of that mattered to me now as I watched the line darken and turn to dust.

NO!” Johnathan, now back in his human form, bellowed as he lunged at me, his hand grasping for the still yellow part of the bond.

He was going to try and reattach them! I watched it happen, horrified. I put my hands up, trying to block him, to affect the bond, but my arms passed through it.

But Johnathan came on anyway. He took two steps and leaped toward me.

I screamed.

At the last second, Vir jumped between us, intercepting Johnathan. Stopping him short of his goal. But the impact sent Vir stumbling backward. Toward me. I watched, stunned and terrified, as the still golden part of my Soulbond plunged deep into Vir’s back.

And grew bright.
