Dirty Little Midlife Mistake by Lilian Monroe

Trina

Look,I’ve been busy. Really busy. I had to move the kids to a new town, unpack up all my stuff (again), get ready to move into Candice’s old house once it’s fixed up, make sure Candice was doing okay, make sure my mother wasn’t doing anything too embarrassing (lost cause), make sure my kids weren’t traumatized by my separation from their father, make sure Kevin got to see them and talk to them, register for schools for the fall, look for a job, field calls from a crying soon-to-be-ex-husband, talk to my lawyer about a divorce, apologize for moving the kids out of state in the midst of a separation…

It’s been…a lot. Too much.

So when, on a warm Wednesday evening in August, my mother pushes me out of the house with stern orders to take some time for myself, I find myself driving aimlessly, until—don’t ask me how it happens—I slide into a parking spot in front of the Cedar Grove. Scanning the bar’s lot, I spy a gleaming Harley Davidson leaning on its kickstand, and I almost run away.

But where would I run to? Back home, to laundry and dishes and children tugging at my sleeve? Back to Kevin and his cheating ways? Back to my mother, who I’m living with even though I’m over forty years old and supposed to be a full-grown adult?

Maybe the bike doesn’t belong to Mac. Maybe it’s some other Harley, and I’ll go inside, have a drink, then go home. Maybe I’m misremembering things, and Mac isn’t anywhere near as attractive as I remember, even though those few moments are burned into my memory in high-definition.

Maybe he won’t remember me. Maybe he’ll think I’m desperate.

Maybe…

You know what? Screw it.

The man owes me a ride, and for once in my life, I’m going to go after what I want.

Locking my car with a soft beep and a flash of the lights, I set my shoulders and walk into the bar.
