I hadn’t yet told her the truth about my trillion-dollar inheritance.
If she found out any other way, I would be ruined. The weekend was designed for her, and I wanted to show her that our life together might be amazing.
However, as we walked up the stairs and she wiped her tears away, I wondered if I’d hurt her. That was the opposite of what I’d intended. I wasn’t sure what to do, and my heart had a huge hole in it.
The door closed behind her. “Let’s get the wine.”
“Sure,” I said and headed to the patio.
She sniffled and held out her hand. “Actually, I need a few minutes.”
Maybe I needed to let her go. My heart shattered. “Of course. Take all the time you need.”
“I’ll be right back.” She kissed my cheek.
My shoulders slumped once I was alone. I had no control over anything. If she wanted to be with me, it was all her choice, and there was nothing left I could do to prove myself to her.
