Crossed Fates by Lexi C. Foss
Dimitri’sblue eyes glittered in the darkness of my room, his presence imposing and borderline intoxicating. “Sapphire.”
“Vampire King,” I returned. “There’s blood in the fridge for later, and I left a bottle of aspirin under your pillow. You’ll need both soon. Not that the aspirin will help. That’s more symbolic for your future headache.”
In the form of an avenging slayer, I thought, amused by the foresight. Oh, the violent fun awaiting his impending choices. I couldn’t wait to watch the match unfold.
“Your penchant for riddles is exhausting.”
“I know.” That was why I always spoke in them. “But if people knew I could speak eloquently, they would ask for more. If I utter nonsense, they just assume I’ve lost my mind.” Such as Makayla calling me a crazy bitch.
I grinned. I really did like that feisty wolf. Maybe I could have been a bit more forthcoming, but she had to realize her fate on her own to accept it. I’d just… nudged her a little.
“Did you tell her about the amulet?” Dimitri demanded.
“Just that it’s similar to the ring and has a few additional gifts.” What would be the enjoyment of giving every detail away? Honestly, some people just needed to live for themselves.
“Sapphire.” He repeated my name in that sexy, dark voice, his presence even more imposing this time. It made me a little jealous of Nikola’s future. Dimitri would be dynamite in bed. Alas, I had a growly wolf in my destiny. I couldn’t see him fully, just heard his sensual snarls.
Mmm. More, please.
“Are you listening to me?”
“No,” I admitted. “Caught up in a vision.” Of washboard abs and a sexy little V-line to his hips. I really hope his face matches the rest of the package.
Dimitri sighed, the sound old and tired. “If you didn’t tell her how the signal works, then how will she know to portal here when we need her?”
I blinked at him. “The signal alerts her when there’s trouble nearby, Dimitri. Not when we need her.”
“What? I specifically said—”
“To portal her here when we are ready,” I finished for him. “Yes, and it will do that. But the signal is just to help her see the signs around her.” I gave him a look. “She couldn’t just become a stay-at-home wolf. She’s much too aggressive for that. She’ll continue her freelance jobs, and I’ll send her messages accordingly. But it’s kind of you to worry.”
I patted him on his muscular arm. He really was a good vampire king. I almost said that out loud but suspected he wouldn’t approve.
“I can’t decide if I want to kill you, throttle you, or fire you.”
“All of the above, I imagine,” I mused. Then I smiled to put him out of his misery. “If we need them, they will be here.” A strong if because the futures kept shifting.
Would Dimitri kill Nikola?
Would Nikola kill Dimitri?
I didn’t know.
He was playing a very dangerous game.
Stakes. Blood. Sires. Oh my!
But that was a story for another time.
“Makayla and Alaric are where they’re meant to be,” I told Dimitri. “And I finally have our ring.” I held it up for him to see. “Which means I’ll know Nikola’s location by nightfall. I suggest you prepare yourself, King of Vampires, for you’re about to meet your Slayer Queen.”
