I gasped, my eyes flying open to find Etta’s body wrapped around mine, protectively pulling me into her. Tears stained my face, her skin, and the pillows beneath us. Breathing shallow, my heart raced as I tried to piece together what had just happened. Unfortunately, I couldn’t make sense of it. It almost felt as if I’d had a glimpse into a part of my mind that I didn’t think I’d ever remember.

And I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to start now.

Pulling her into me, I wrapped my arms around her and breathed in her sweet, calming scent, allowing it to wash over me. She’s here. She’d stayed with me and didn’t run. I couldn’t believe it. For a moment, I allowed myself to think about what that could mean.

Could I really have a relationship with Hettie? Could I let her in? Before becoming too consumed by my thoughts, the steady sound of her breathing coaxed me back into a deep sleep.
