One year later
“That little bean right there?” I ask and stare at the screen.
“That little bean right there,” the technician says and points to the spot on the screen. “And that,” she adds, pointing at this little flickering flash on the screen, “that’s your baby’s heartbeat.” Then the thud of our child’s heart beating fills the room in the most glorious sound I’ve ever heard.
I start grinning as I stare at the screen, then glance over at Cassie. She’s chuckling softly.
I feel my eyes widen as I stare at the little miracle Cassie and I created. I hold her hand, her wedding ring digging into my palm and making me remember our wedding day and how I wish I could marry her all over again.
I glance over at the woman who holds my heart, the one I would do anything for, and I feel everything in me tighten. She’s my world. Giving her hand a squeeze, I force myself to not break down and cry. I’m just so damn happy right now. She has tears in her eyes, ones of happiness.
Every possessive part of my body rears up. This is my woman. She’s carrying my baby.
All is fucking right with the world.
“Can you tell if it’s a boy or a girl?” Cassie asks, and I turn my attention to the monitor again.
The technician laughs softly. “Sorry, it’s a little too early for that.”
I smile because truth is, I kind of want to be surprised when the big day finally comes and our baby is born. But then again, if Cassie wants to know, so be it. It’s whatever she wants. Always.
Glancing at Cassie again, I see she’s smiling from ear to ear.
“We’re having a baby,” she says so softly I know she means it for only me to hear.
“A baby,” I say in response and lean in to kiss her on the lips. “I love you.” I’m staring into her eyes, those big, beautiful eyes that have my heart skipping a beat—just like every time I look into them.
“I love you, too,” she says.
I didn’t think it was possible, but her words make me fall even more madly in love with her.
