The Clone’s Mate by Susan Trombley

Author’s Note

If you made it this far, thank you SO much for reading the latest book in my Iriduan Test Subjects series! You have no idea how much it means to me to share my worlds and stories with such awesome readers.

I really hope you enjoyed this story. I know that the reverse harem trope is a departure for the series, and I understand that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I try to remain consistent with a series when it comes to MF versus RH, but some characters have a story that involves multiple partners, and this story just so happened to be one of them. At this time, the only other RH I plan for this series will be Ava’s story, which I have already made clear will be RH, so for those fans who prefer only MF romance, don’t worry, the series isn’t changing permanently! This book was a one-off in that respect (other than Ava’s ;) It’s coming, it’s coming! I swear! :D)

Because this story was a bit of a departure from the series, I am really nervous about how it will be received. The idea for this story came to me when I wanted to do some things in the first book of this series that I ultimately didn’t do, because I wasn’t sure how it would be received. One of those things was to address the fate of the villain, Ilyan. I’m a sucker for a villain redemption story, though I suppose this one isn’t necessarily a redemption, but I felt like it would be fun to give him his own HEA. I’ve had plans to bring him back into the series since I “killed him off” in the first book.

Another motivation for this story was that I really loved Thrax’s character design, and I wanted to write another character with many of the same traits and characteristics as him. I loved writing his character and his transformation from heartless killer to empathetic lover. This time, I don’t give Subject 34’s perspective in order to keep my readers guessing throughout the story. I chose this very narrow point of view (only Rhonda’s) as a way to immerse my readers and leave them as uncertain and off balance as the heroine during her story. I know that many readers of romance love to look inside the heads of the heroes to see what they think about the heroine, but in this case, I wanted to show that through their actions, dialogue, and body language instead of simply telling it by exposing the thoughts of Subject 34, Nirgal, and Ilyan.

I hadn’t planned on writing this story when I did, though I always had plans to return to the Iriduan experiments on the athraxius. While I was working on Shulgi’s story, I got this intense desire to write another athraxius story, and I ended up writing both books simultaneously. I felt inspired by this story, just as I did by Shulgi’s. I can’t always explain why this happens—why stories take hold of me like they do and push every other work in progress aside. I know it is probably frustrating for my fans who are waiting patiently for other books. I appreciate you all for your patience and understanding!

I do have other books in the works. I don’t want to mention any details at this point. I like to wait until my projects are close to completion before dropping details. I will say, yes, I definitely DO want to write Ava’s story and soon. I just can’t make promises yet because I don’t want to disappoint anyone by failing to meet them on time.

I have some things going on in my personal life in regards to health that are throwing me a bit for a loop, but I’m still making an effort to get to the keyboard every day and work on something. I expect that this disruption will only be temporary, and I’m looking forward to being able to focus fully on my stories again.

I love to create these worlds, characters, and stories, and I am immensely grateful for all your support that allows me to do this for a living! Thank you a thousand times over!
