The Meeting Point by Olivia Lara

Eighty-Seven

I get the hoodie out of my backpack and put it on, before stuffing my hands in the pockets. I can’t believe it. It’s still there.

I may have just imagined this whole thing. You. Today.

I may have just imagined us looking into each other’s eyes tonight, across the fire.

I may be the only one feeling all these incredible feelings today.

I may be that crazy guy who falls in love in just a few hours, maybe minutes.

I may very well be… and if I am, then you will leave with him and I will never see you again. But if I’m not, know that I will be waiting for you here. Tomorrow. The day after tomorrow. Whenever. To see the sunrise together. Like I promised. All you need to do is text me and I will come running. (my name and phone number are on the back)

PS: And yes, I do want to know what your question #50 is. And I can’t wait for you to tell me…

The sunrise is hours away, but I don’t care. I’ve waited a year for this. I’ve waited a lifetime for this!

“Maya, are you leaving?” Celine asks when she sees me heading for the door.

I stop short and turn around. “I have to tell you something, but I want you to know that I never meant to hurt you or lie to you and I care about you deeply. You are a wonderful friend.”

She squeezes my hands and smiles. “Maya, I know. I’ve known who you are and why you’re here since the moment I saw you back in the café. I should be the one to apologize. I wanted to tell you, but he asked me not to interfere.”

We hug, both with tears in our eyes.
