Wes

Isit forward, resting my elbows on my knees as I stare at Mom, who’s fast asleep in the bed she was guided to after I managed to get us inside the compound. The guys who were patrolling the gate weren’t ones I’d really seen in my time here, so it took me longer than I wanted to get her—us—to safety.

But the second Rosita and Jada saw me trying to get Mom out of my car, they recognized us despite the blood and rushed to help.

Mom was barely awake. The blow that Dad landed on her was hard—so hard that as I sit here, I can’t help but keep making sure that her chest is moving.

She’s probably got a concussion and really, we shouldn’t be letting her sleep. But equally, keeping her awake and aware of what happened, what she threw herself in the middle of, is probably worse.

“She’s going to be okay, Wesley. You both are,” Jada says softly.

“He’s going to come for us, and when he does—”

“When he does, you’ve got the entire club behind you.”

“The club has no reason to protect us. We’re only here because of Sadie.”

“Is that what you really think?”

“I-I don’t know.” I think back to what Rosita said earlier about Mom possibly being a part of the club if things turned out differently, and I can’t help wondering what the truth of that is.

Did she grow up around the club? I never knew my grandparents on her side. Why was that?

I was always made to believe they didn’t get along. But is that really the case? It was always Dad who told me those stories. Was it all bullshit?

“When she’s awake, I think you and your mom need to have a chat, sweetie.”

“Yeah, I’m starting to think you might be right.”

“If you’re all okay, I’m going to go and check in with the others. See if there’s been any news on Micky and the others stuck in the hospital.”

“We’re fine. Thank you so much for looking after her.”

“Anytime, sweetie. I know this place is unusual, and the guys can be scary. But honestly, you couldn’t find a group of people who love each other more fiercely. When we say we look after our own, we really mean it. And now with you involved with Sadie, and your mom’s history with the club, that extends to both of you.”

“T-thank you,” I breathe, hoping that it sounds sincere but aware that mostly, I’m just confused.

Jada is almost at the door when it swings open, damn near knocking her on her ass. “Ray.” She gasps in shock when we both look up to find Sadie’s scary father standing in the doorway, looking larger than life. But he doesn’t look at either of us. Instead, his gaze is firmly locked on my mom.

“Thank you, Jada. I can take it from here.”

“O-okay,” she stutters, slipping around him when he takes a giant step into the room. But before she disappears from my sight, she shoots me a concerned glance over her shoulder. “You okay?” she mouths.

I nod, forcing a smile onto my face, and she finally closes the door behind her, leaving me alone with two people who clearly have a history that I had no clue about.

“What happened?” Ray demands, and my mouth starts running away with me before my brain registers.

“My dad found out about me and Sadie.”

He stills at my words and turns his deadly, cold eyes on me. “You promised me he wouldn’t be a problem.”

I swallow nervously, my heart like a runaway train in my chest. “I-I know I did. I hadn’t been home with everything going o-on and I—”

“I don’t want your excuses. They’re too little too late, don’t you think?”

“Y-yes, sir.”

“What did I tell you about calling me that?” He takes pity on me when I pale. “Did you know your mom and I went to school together?”

“N-no. I’ve only learned today that you really knew each other.”

“We more than knew each other,” he mutters, his expression softening for the first time since he barged into the room as he stares down at her.

Reaching for her hand, he lifts her knuckles to his lips and places a gentle kiss there. “I can’t regret how things turned out,” he mutters, almost as if he’s talking to himself. “I got my Sadie, after all, and she got you. But I never got over her.”

He sucks in a deep breath as if he suddenly realized he said the words out loud. “I can keep an eye on her if you’d like to go and find Sadie. Dane is back. I’m sure you want to see him.”

“Oh… I, uh…”

“I won’t let anything happen to her. I can assure you, I’m nothing like your cunt of a father, Pretty.”

Pushing from the chair, unable to sit here when I know my girl is close, I walk over to the bed and stop in front of Ray. “I’m glad she’s got you, si—Ray. Maybe you can talk some sense into her, stop her from going back to him.”

“I’ll do what I can, son.”

I drop a kiss to Mom’s brow before turning my back on them and slipping from the room before I change my mind and refuse to leave her side.

The hallway is empty as I make my way to Dane’s room. My head is still spinning from Ray being so gentle with my mom, and I don’t even think to knock before I twist the handle and step inside.

“What the fuck are you—Pretty?” Rhett barks, looking over his shoulder at me from where he dived over Sadie to protect her.

“S-sorry, I didn’t even think,” I mutter, my eyes falling to Sadie’s naked chest when Rhett rolls off her. “W-where’s Stray?” Ripping my eyes from Sadie, I look over my shoulder, thinking he could be in the bathroom.

“Long story,” Sadie mutters, grabbing Rhett’s discarded shirt and lifting it to cover her breasts. “We told him about… yeah… he didn’t take it very well and took off.”

“Is he well enough to just leave?” I ask, concern flooding me.

“No,” Rhett spits, “but we could hardly stop him. We’d just told him he’s related to the cunt that’s trying to kill both him and Sadie and take down our club.”

“Yeah, I guess not. Where’s he gone?”

“We don’t know, but we have some suspicions,” they both say simultaneously.

“We agreed to give him two hours to sulk before we went after him.”

“And you thought you’d make use of the time in his bed while you wait.”

“Got any better suggestions, Pretty?”

My chin drops. “Uh…”

“Exactly. No better way to get out of your own head than to make Sadie scream.”

“You’re wicked,” Sadie jokes, reaching out to slap his shoulder, but Rhett sees it coming and captures her wrist, forcing it back against the bed and making her lie down.

Straddling her waist, he pins her in place as she squirms. “Careful, princess. We’ll start to think you don’t want the same things we do.”

Snatching his shirt from her chest, he throws it across the room, exposing her to both of us. “And we both know how greedy you are for us.”

“Rhett,” she moans when he pinches her nipple, making her back arch off the bed.

“You think she’s wet, Pretty?”

“I would say it depends how far you guys had got when I walked in, but this is Sadie we’re talking about. She’s always wet when one of us is in the room.” I smirk.

“You noticed that too, huh?” Rhett mutters.

“Rhett, please,” she moans, as he trails a finger down between her breasts, circling her belly button. “Wes?”

“I’m not getting involved, princess.” I wink, watching the movement of Rhett’s fingers as he teases her.

Her chest heaves as her desperation for more gets the better of her.

“What do you want us to do?” he asks her. “Would you like one at a time, or both together?”

“Either,” she breathes, arching even more in an attempt to get more of Rhett’s touch.

“Greedy little slut, aren’t you, princess?”

“This isn’t funny, Savage,” she snaps, suddenly changing tack in the hope it’ll get her what she wants.

“You look sexy when you’re mad.”

She growls, her jaw ticking as she glares between the two of us. Rhett chuckles as he holds her still. It’s a weird sound coming from such a tough, scary looking biker, but I’m beginning to realize that Sadie turns him into almost as big a teddy bear as she does Stray.

They’re still locked in their battle of wills when a phone starts blaring from somewhere on the bed.

“Ah, seems like time’s up.”

She continues to glare, daggers damn near shooting from her eyes. “If it were anyone else but Stray, I’d tell you to forget it. But seeing as he needs us more than I need to come right now, I’ll let it go. But you owe me. You both fucking owe me.”

Rhett shoots me a look and I nod in agreement. “Don’t worry, princess. We’ll more than make it up to you.”

“And don’t expect me to return the favor.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it. Now get decent, we’ve got a brother to find.”

The second Rhett releases Sadie, he climbs from the bed and storms to the bathroom, leaving us alone for what feels like the first time in forever.

“How are you doing?” she asks as she pushes from the bed, searching for her bra.

“I’m… I’m okay. Nothing I’m not used to.”

“Wes,” she breathes, her brows pulling together as she studies me.

“Don’t, princess. Don’t look at me like that.”

“I hate this, Wes. You shouldn’t have to deal with all this shit.”

“Did you know about our parents?” I ask, interrupting her.

“No. But I learned pretty quick this afternoon.”

“What do you know?” I ask, desperate to get to the bottom of just how serious Ray and my mom’s relationship might’ve been.

“Not much, but there’s history there. Dad got really touchy about it when I tried to dig.”

“I thought everything was already complicated. Why does it just keep getting worse?”

“I wish I knew,” she says, finally pulling her shirt on and hiding temptation from me.

Stepping up to her, I pull her body into my arms, breathing in her soothing scent and letting her take me away, albeit briefly, from the shit storm that today has been.

And that’s how Rhett finds us when he emerges from the bathroom.

“Right, you two ready to go and find our brother?”

“Yeah. Let’s go.”

“If you’re lucky we can finish what we started and put on a nice little show to get him out of his own head. Assuming he’s not fallen off his fucking bike on the way to wherever he was going.”

Sadie shoots Rhett a fierce look. “Don’t. Don’t even try to fucking joke about that.”

“Come on, princess. Rhett’s the only unharmed one out of the three of us. You need him in full working order.”

She growls at him, her tiny fists curling at her side, and I direct her out of the room.
