The Girlfriend Game by Sierra Hill
Acknowledgments
I finished the first draft of this book during the Summer Olympics, when Simone Biles made a historical decision to withdraw from several major events due to her own mental health crisis. In my opinion, that took guts and I applaud her decision to make her mental health a priority. I can’t even imagine what it was like for Simone in that moment with the world watching and everyone’s unbelievably high expectations on her tiny shoulders. I’m glad she listened to herself and kept herself safe.
I researched quite a lot from the archives and from recent news related to other professional athletes who have been open and vocal about their struggles with mental health. Olympic great, Michael Phelps. NBA player, Kevin Love. And tennis star, Naomi Osaka, who said, “It’s okay not to be okay.” And that’s the truth. We are all only human. And with that comes the struggles we face.
All I ask, Readers, is that you remain kind to yourself and kind to others who suffer from mental health setbacks. Life is hard. But there is hope and help so we don’t have to go it alone.
xx, Sierra
Thanks also to my editor, Jordan, who took on the task of editing my chaotic and messy first draft. I appreciate all your helpful suggestions and feedback where it was truly needed.
To my friend Jen Nathan who gave me such great advice on my plot when I got stuck and had no idea where Zeke and Kendall’s story was going to go. Your calm reassurance is always valued and much appreciated.
Much thanks and kudos to my PA and publicist, Autumn from Wordsmith Publicity. You’re always two steps ahead and know what needs to be done long before I do. Thanks for keeping things going when I’m head down in the writing cave.
