Six Weeks of Seduction by Ellis O. Day

CHAPTER 40:  SARAH

Sarah shoved her phone in her purse as she walked out of her bedroom.

“Everything okay?” asked Maisie.

“Yeah.” If Nick being pissed at her again was okay.

Maisie just stared at her.

“It’s fine.” Her sister had a way of reading her like no one else. “Nick was going to come by and pick me up.”

“And you refused?”

“Yeah. It was out of his way.” She looked down at Tank. She wasn’t good at lying to her sister. She had no idea where Nick had gone so she had no idea if it were out of his way.

“Mom, you coming? We’re going to turn on the movie,” yelled Kyle from the living room.

“I’ll be there in a minute. You two can start.” Maisie lowered her voice. “I have some info to dig out of my sister.”

“It’s no big deal.”

Maisie grabbed her arm and led her to the front door.

Sarah rested her hand on Tank’s head. He nudged her thigh. “Go on. Go get some popcorn.” The dog was a popcorn beast. He nudged her once more and trotted into the living room to join Kyle and Peter.

“He seems to be doing a lot better,” said Maisie. “I think having Nick around is good for him.” She turned to her sister. “And you. So, don’t screw it up.”

“Hey!”

“Why wouldn’t you let him pick you up? So what if it was out of the way. Men like to be in charge. They like to believe they’re taking care of us.”

“I had to be sure I could get back here on time for Tank.” She couldn’t tell her sister that she couldn’t let Nick meet Peter.

“Stop blaming everything on that dog.”

“I’m not.” She almost took a step back at the anger in her sister’s voice.

“You are and you have been. Ever since Adam died you’ve been hiding. Somehow,”—she raised her hand in the air—“you found a guy who’s crazy about you and willing—”

“He’s not.”

“He is. He’s practically moved in and I doubt you made that easy on him. Lord knows, Tank didn’t. Yet, it’s been a week and he’s still here.”

“Yeah. One week. Only one week.” Not a month. He hasn’t had time to get tired of her yet.

“He tracked you down.”

“Like a stalker.” Nick wasn’t a stalker but she hated losing arguments.

“Like a guy who’s crazy about a girl he can’t find.” Maisie smiled. “He’s only a stalker if you aren’t interested. Otherwise, it’s romantic.”

“Please.”

“It’s the truth and I know you’re interested.” Maisie’s eyes gleamed. “That outfit proves you’re interested. Exactly, what are you and Nick doing tonight because I know you aren’t going line dancing.”

She was not going to explain her sexual fantasy to her sister. “I’ve got to go before he gets more upset. He hates when I’m late.” Especially, since he’s going to be in costume staring at the suspension bar.

Maisie grabbed her and hugged her.  “Give him a chance, Sarah. He really cares for you.”

“I am.”

Maisie frowned.

“He’s living here, right?”

“Yeah, but let him live here.” Maisie placed her hand over Sarah’s heart.

“I’m scared.” Her breath hitched.

“I know.” Maisie hugged her again. “It’s always scary to open yourself up, but”—she glanced into the living room—“it’s worth it.”

“I’m trying.” It was just so hard to trust anyone, especially a guy like Nick.
