Six Weeks of Seduction by Ellis O. Day

CHAPTER 67:  NICK

Nick came out of the bathroom and Lena, a friend of Mattie’s, grabbed his arm.

“Something’s wrong with Sarah.”

He shoved past Lena and raced into the kitchen. Sarah was on the floor, women surrounding her. “What happened?” He pushed through to her side. She was so pale. “Call 911.”

“Already did,” said his sister.

He lowered his face to Sarah’s. She was still breathing. He felt for her pulse. It beat slow and steady. “What the hell happened?”

“I…I don’t know,” said Aunt Roe. “One minute we were having a nice conversation and the next she was pale and gasping for air.”

“Then she fell,” said Maria.

He cradled her in his arms. “Sarah, baby. Wake up.” He brushed the hair from her face.

The soft sounds of a siren drifted closer.

“Someone go outside and wave them in. They don’t need to waste time searching for the house,” he yelled.

Maria and Lena hurried out of the room.

Sarah’s eyelids fluttered. He touched her cheek.

“Nick?” Her green eyes were confused.

“Yeah, baby. I’m here.” He ran his thumb over her cheek again. “You okay?”

“Get out of the way,” yelled Maria, making room for the paramedics.

“The baby?” Sarah grabbed his hand.

Nick felt the blood drain from his face. Sarah was pregnant. Before he could say anything, the paramedics pushed him aside, asking her questions and taking her vitals.

“I’m fine,” she said but the paramedics continued their job.

“You need to go to the hospital,” said Mom who’d pushed through the crowd and was holding Sarah’s hand. “Let them check you out, honey.” Mom kissed her hand. “Do that for me?”

Sarah nodded, her eyes going to Nick. He tried to move to her side, but the paramedics had her on a stretcher between them, escorting her out of the house.

“I’m coming with you.” He trailed after them.

“We’re taking her to Mercy General,” said one of the paramedics. “You can meet us there.”

He watched as they loaded her into the ambulance and drove away. Her eyes looked haunted as she stared at him.

“Go, honey,” said his mom. “Call us and tell us how she is.” Mom hugged him, handing him Sarah’s purse.
