The first transmissionfrom Damon came in hours ago.

I’ve got her.

I think we let out a collective sigh of relief.

We’ve boarded our ship and have left Athion’s atmosphere by the time the second transmission comes though.

Tell me again why you love this girl? I’m not seeing it.

“Oh boy.” I laugh and show it to the others.

“Mercy’s going to find out why Damon has been on assignment for eighteen months,” Dimka says.

“No one wants to be around him.” Kai sits in the pilot seat, navigating. “Not even the Master. You notice he sends him out on jobs as much as possible.”

“That’s not because he’s miserable to be around,” I say. “It’s because he’s ruthless.”

“He has a lot of anger,” Dimka says in understanding. “What he experienced was harsh—no more than many others on Earth, but I can relate to his pain.”

“True,” I say, flipping a switch on the overhead panel. “Do you think they’ll be safe?”

“From getting caught?” Kai asks.

“From one another,” Dimka replies, knowingly.

I nod. Mercy isn’t like other women and it’s not that I think every man is attracted to her, but Damon… He’s one of us. He’s a brother, and somehow that connection between us has crossed over to her.

“I think it’s going to be a long two weeks for all of us, but in the end we’ll be together.” I rub my chin. “Maybe more than before.”
