“Nina,” I said. The name seemed to float out of my mouth like a whisper with just enough force to be more than air. I couldn’t even imagine how thunderstruck my face looked. This wasn’t just surprising; it was utterly unbelievable.

“Mark,” she said. Her face showed as much surprise as I imagined mine did. Nina swallowed hard and asked, “Are you a Daddy, too?”

I couldn’t answer right away. Finally, I grabbed a beer from the table, twisted off the top, and downed half of it. Then, I nodded and asked, “Are you a Little?”

She looked nervous as she responded. “I’m not sure. I think so.” She shrugged. “I guess I won’t know until I find someone.” She smiled a bit sadly, but then she put on a bright face and asked, “Which of the girls here is with you?”

Again, I couldn’t answer right away. Finally, I said, “I’m sorry. I’m just surprised to see you.”

“Kendra invited me,” she said. “We had a playdate, with coloring and stuff. I really liked it. So, she asked me to come to this barbecue. I wasn’t sure because… Well, because no matter how much people try to make you feel welcome, you’re still the single person hanging out with all the people with relationships.”

“God, I know it,” I said. She looked at me with a curious expression and I said, “I never answered your question. Sorry. None of the girls here are with me. I don’t have anyone at the moment.”

It could have been my imagination, but it sure as hell seemed as if her interest perked up considerably. I wrote it off to wishful thinking, but she responded with a tentative, “Maybe since we’re both here together we could kind of stick close.”

Miraculously, I didn’t have a heart attack.

“I’d like that,” I said.

I watched her whole body show her relief and realized the girl had actually been afraid I might refuse her! It wasn’t easy to wrap my head around that, but it was easy indeed to feel wonderful about it. I looked around. I suddenly realized Kendra had conspired with Art to make this happen. I wasn’t angry about it at all, although I imagined if it were anyone, other than Nina, I might have been. Nobody stared at us, but it felt as if there were dozens of eyes on us nonetheless.

“What if we stick together somewhere else?” I asked. “Do you want to get out of here?”

She smiled and I thought she actually blushed a little. “Are you sure it’s okay to miss the barbecue?”

“We’re friends honey,” I said. “It’s not as if we have a secret society or club rules.” She giggled a little and I wanted to just lift her up in my arms and kiss her all over. “Besides,” I said. “If you’ve had one elk steak, you’ve had ‘em all.”

She smiled and said, “I’ve never had elk, and I don’t think I want to try it.”

“Oh no,” I said. “If we were staying you’d have to be polite and try it. Little girls are polite.”

She giggled and said, “Okay… Daddy.” The word was shockingly powerful coming from her and I could barely contain myself. I put my hand on the small of her back and guided her towards the door. I caught Art’s eye on the way out and he smiled, nodded slightly, and made a gun with his fingers, shooting his approval my direction.

Outside she said, “I don’t really know how I’m supposed to behave. This is my first date with a Daddy.”

I was lucky to get anything out, what with her calling this a date and then using the term Daddy again. I managed to say, “Just be Nina and don’t worry about the rest of it.”

She said, “Okay, Daddy,” as I led her to my car. “I’ll bring you back later for your car,” I said.

“Kendra drove me here, today,” she said.

“Then be responsible and let her know you’re leaving, little girl,” I said. God! Even that little bit of direction made me feel so damned good.

“Okay, Daddy,” she said. She turned around and started towards the house.

I called her back.

“Yes, Daddy?”

“Why don’t you send her a text, Sweetie,” I said. “That way we can leave and it won’t interrupt whatever is happening back at the house.”

She smiled brightly, and I really couldn’t believe how damned adorable the girl was. I wanted to pull her to me right there and climb into the backseat and make love to her for hours. I opened the door for her and she slipped inside. A few minutes later, on the road, she said, “The text!” I smiled as she took care of that and put her phone away.

“If we have lunch at one of the nicer restaurants, it’ll be filled with tourists,” I said. “If we eat at Georgia’s, it will mostly be locals. I’m happy to do either. Where would you like to eat?”

“I get to decide?” she asked in wonder.

“Today you do,” I said.

She smiled broadly and said, “Georgia’s, please, Daddy!”

“Georgia’s it is.”

Suddenly she frowned and I asked , “What’s wrong Princess?”

She smiled for a second and I felt pretty sure it was because I called her a princess. I tucked that away.

“I didn’t know I’d be able to decide things,” she said. “There’s so much I don’t know. I just don’t know what to do with a Daddy.”

“Honey,” I said and that produced another smile. “I already said –just be you and don’t worry about the rest.”

“I know, Daddy,” she said. “But how?”

“How do you be yourself?”

“No, Daddy,” she said softly. “How do I not worry about the rest?”

I didn’t know how to answer right away. If Taylor had been sitting beside me, I would have said something simple. I would have told her to trust me and that everything would be okay. It would have worked. I didn’t think it would work for Nina, but I still almost said it.

Finally, I said, “Be honest with me, Princess. Why are you worried about the rest?”

“Because…” I could see she was struggling to tell me. I waited a moment.

“Are you afraid of what I’ll think if you do something wrong?” She nodded and I realized she was on the brink of tears. “Are you afraid I’ll stop liking you, if you do something wrong?” She nodded and her face crumpled. I stopped the car and pulled her in my arms.

“Listen to me, Princess. I’ll still like you no matter what happens today. This isn’t a test and you don’t have to worry about making mistakes.” She still wept softly as I said, “It’s my job to help you know what to do. So, if you make any mistakes, it gives me the chance to be a good Daddy for you.”

She pulled back and looked up at me. “Really? You won’t think I’m bad?”

I wanted to laugh but the seriousness in her expression was genuine. Instead, I smiled and said, “I’ll think my Princess needs help and I’ll help her.”

She stared at me in wonder and then nodded firmly.

“Then I can be Nina.”

I kissed her forehead

As far as I was concerned, that was a pretty perfect first kiss.
