Chapter 32

Trevor does text me when he gets home, but I don’t respond. I’d rather let him think I’m sleeping instead of lying in bed and wondering what to do next. I eventually fall asleep and wake up to the sun streaming through my window.

I take a long hot shower, brew a pot of coffee, and make eggs and toast for breakfast. For whatever reason, I’m starving this morning and I mow through the food like I haven’t eaten in a week. I wonder if it’s because I was in the cold water for so long last night and my body is still burning calories.

My phone rings as I’m doing the dishes and I see Trevor’s name on the screen. I towel my hands off and answer it. “Hey.”

“Hey yourself,” he says. “You got my text last night?”

“I did,” I tell him. “Thank you for letting me know.”

“I take it you actually got some sleep.”

“Uh…yeah. I guess I fell asleep.”

“That’s good,” he says. “I’m glad.”

“Yeah,” I tell him. “So are you done?”

I’m hoping he’ll tell me they’re done so I don’t have to think about following up on what we learned last night and everything I’ve been worrying about can be put to bed.

“No,” he says, and doesn’t offer anything else.

So much for that wish.

“Great,” I say.

“We’re fine, Pres,” he says. “Stop worrying.”

That’s so easy for him to say.

“What are you doing today?” he asks.

“I don’t know yet,” I tell him. “Haven’t made any plans.”

“Spend the day with me,” he says. “Let’s get lunch and then go surf and have dinner.”

“Well, that’s a switch.”

“What is?”

“You wanting to spend the day with me,” I tell him. “I’ve barely seen you since I’ve been home.”

“I know and I’m sorry,” he says. “So let’s make up for it today. I’ll pick you up at noon. Cool?”

Part of me wants to tell him no, that if he wants to see me, he needs to tell me the whole story. But I don’t want to fight and I know he won’t tell me. He’s made that pretty clear. I feel like the only way I can learn anything is by spending time with him and maybe wearing him down.

“Okay,” I tell him. “Cool.”
