Mafia Daddy’s Faithful Little by Mary Potter
CHAPTER TEN
Raymond
I saw the burning house first.
Maybe it was not Maddy’s. That was the first thought that flew into my mind. But I was sure it was hers. Lisa had confirmed it.
“Wait, what do you mean by you know where Maddy is?” Ethan had asked her as soon as I got off the phone with Edward Cone.
“She told me about some cabin house she purchased last week. It’s beside the Leevens sea.”
I began to make for the door. “Why do I not know about it?”
“Because it’s supposed to be a surprise for you.”
That broke my heart.
“I think she’s there,” I said to Ethan and Lisa. “Thanks for helping. I have to go talk to her.”
“Hey, don’t be silly,” Ethan said, already putting on his coat. “We are coming with you.”
“How do we find the cabin?” I had asked Lisa in the car.
“She said it’s the only one at the southern part of the beach.”
We had found the cabin as soon as we got there but it was on fire!
“Oh my God!” Ethan exclaimed.
I jumped down from the car, racing towards the house. Maddy was not in sight but her car was.
“She’s inside!” I yelled to the others.
The front door was in flames too but I managed to kick it down, running into the smoky house.
“Help!” I heard a voice coming from somewhere in the room.
“Maddy!” I called back.
When I got to her, she was underneath the fallen roof of the cabin.
All I thought about was saving her. As I pushed the wood aside, feeling my hands get blistered, I heard Maddy call me mom.
“No, it’s Raymond,” I told her, carrying her in my arms. “I’m here to save you.”
She broke down into tears as I took out of hell and into the paradise of safety.

When Maddy Parker woke up at the hospital, I was beside her. She looked so beautiful to me, the face of the woman I loved and I had risked my life to save.
“Maddy,” I called her, unsure about touching her or not. “You’re awake?”
Maddy stared at me as though she was seeing me for the first time. “What happened?”
“The cabin house was burning when we got to you but you’re safe now.”
“We?” She asked again.
“Ethan and Lisa were with me.”
The lady stared at me for a long time before she heaved and decided not to say anything again. I didn’t even know how to begin my apology. Maddy hated me now. She had said so.
“Maddy,” I found the strength to say. “I’m sorry.”
A tear dropped from her eye. “Why did you do that to me?”
It was then I dared to touch her. As I did, I winced from the pain of having burnt palms. Maddy’s eyes fell on my bandaged hands.
“It was a mistake, a mistake I could never tell you about,” I confessed to her. “I was a coward and I want you to forgive me.”
But her gaze was still on my hands. I tried to take them away but she held them gently, brushing her thumbs over the bandage.
“Did I do this to you?” She asked.
“It’s nothing. I…”
“It’s something, Ray,” she said, now staring into my eyes, her look, bearing this warmth that relieved me. “You saved my life.”
“It’s because I love you. I would never have forgiven myself if something had happened to you.”
“I love you too, Raymond Baxter,” Maddy said.
I didn’t know how to react to that. It could only mean that Maddy had forgiven me. Damn! The joy I felt was overwhelming.
She leaned forward and kissed me. My wounded heart no longer hurt me. It was as though Maddy had picked up the pieces and arranged it to become whole once more.
“I want to take in Derek,” she said as soon as she broke the kiss. That boy shouldn’t pay for what you did.”
I nodded. “But Naomi, I have to pay her until you know, she’s…”
“I understand perfectly well and I don’t hate her. She’s consumed by a lot right now, my rage would do nothing.”
“I’m sorry again, Maddy,” I told her. “I would never lie to you again. This is my promise.”
Maddy smiled. “I think you should seal your promise by an oath.”
I raised an eyebrow at her. “What do you mean?”
Her smile grew wider. “I mean that we should get married, Raymond Baxter.”
I couldn’t believe my ears. Maddy Parker was now ready to marry me?
“This isn’t a joke, right?”
She seemed offended but then burst out laughing. “I’m not joking. We can get married right now. I don’t care! I just want to spend the rest of my life with the man I love.”
I tried hard not to cry. “Me too!”
Just then, Ethan and Lisa walked into the room.
“Maddy!” Lisa cried and hurried to hug her.
“Hey, Lisa,” Maddy said. “Thanks for coming to save me.”
“Oh, Ray did the work. You should have seen him running into the house and pulling you out like some superhero.”
Maddy winked at me. “He’s my hero.”
“Are we interrupting something?” Ethan asked.
I turned to grin on my face. I’m getting married, Ethan! I’m fucking getting married.”
