LOLA

The wedding was everything I had dreamed of and more. Marcus was so sweet the whole time. It seemed he was never able to leave my side, always appearing with another glass of champagne or a pastry he’d snuck out of the kitchen.

It was one of those glorious summer nights where I thought anything was possible. I was so in love with Marcus, and all our wonderful friends were there. I never wanted the night to end.

“Come sit with me a minute,” Marcus said, appearing by my side when I was in the midst of a conversation with Josh.

“Sure,” I said, following him towards the swing in the garden.

We sat like that for a few seconds, silently enjoying each other’s company.

“Have you given any more thought about where you want to take our honeymoon?” he asked.

“I kind of want to go to Honolulu—it looks beautiful this time of year,” I told him. “But Daddy, I know it’s so expensive. I don’t want you to waste that trip on me.”

“I would be honored to take you to Hawaii,” he said. “Besides, I’m not made of stone. I have plenty saved up. I was just waiting on you to pick the perfect destination.”

He slid his phone out of the pocket of his vest and began typing in flights.

I eased back, resting my head against his shoulder.

“Nothing could make this day more perfect,” I said.

“It is quite the wedding,” he responded. “I’ve never seen so many people in one place before. Not since…”

His voice trailed off.

I squeezed his hand. “If your family were here right now, they would be so proud of the man you’ve become. You make me so happy every day. Just being with you is like a dream come true.”

He leaned over and kissed the top of my head.

“I feel the same, baby girl. You’re the most wonderful person on this earth. I believe we were destined to be together.”

Just then, a blue jay flew across the path.

I watched as Marcus analyzed the bird for a few seconds, enamored with its bright blue colors.

“Want to go dance?” he asked.

“What about booking the plane tickets?”

“All set. We’re on the first flight out this Friday.”

I squealed with happiness. “Yes, let’s go dance, Daddy. I want to remember this day for the rest of my life.”

I took his hand and led him back towards the tent.

Everyone was already enamored with one another, partying under the deep blue night sky. I could see clusters of other Littles gossiping with each other, eating cake, clinging to their Daddies. I couldn’t believe how lucky I was.

I was definitely going to remember this beautiful night for the rest of my life.

MARCUS

Lola had white peonies in her hair that glittered beneath the fairy lights. I felt a hum in my heart watching her twirl again and again across the dance floor.

I thought I wouldn’t leave her with any hickeys, but I noticed one earlier, peeking out where her back was revealed through her wedding dress.

Lola had freaked out, of course. Not in a bad way, just got nervous that others would make fun of her for being with her the day before our wedding.

Luckily one of her friends, Mara, had come with coverup and properly dabbed away the bite.

“It felt so good in the moment,” Lola had told me later on. “I didn’t want you to stop. I’m so attracted to you, it’s crazy.”

I felt that now. The desire to take her there, in the middle of the dance floor. I felt the love and adoration I had for Lola, not only because she was now my wife, but because it was so clear everyone loved her.

She so clearly was filled with people who loved and cared about her. It was incredible that she was mine.

We danced the night away, the floor filled with couples. I saw Josh on the sidelines, chatting up a few people. I could only hope that he would find somebody to love the way that I had.

It felt silly, to be thinking about one of my colleagues while I was dancing with my wife on my wedding day. But I knew if I told Lola, she would be proud of me. She loved when I supported others.

Soon, it became late. Others began to filter out. We had several guests staying at our house for a few days, but I wanted to get myself alone with Lola.

“Do you want to take a walk?” I asked her and she nodded excitedly.

Rather than walking around the house, shying away from the other guests, we decided to walk out into the street.

We walked through the neighborhood, traipsing down the paths which fed throughout town. I hadn’t walked those paths since I was a child, and it was warm and beautiful as ever. There were fresh flowers, wildflowers, and houses blinking on and off in the distance.

Lola seemed distracted by the tunnel of trees, turning her eyes upwards so she could be looking at the stars laced between the treetops.

“Are you happy, baby girl?”

She turned and nodded.

“Daddy, of course I am. This is the most amazing day of my entire life. Are you happy, too?”

I nodded. “You know I am.”

We stopped in a clearing. The next walk-through would lead to a soccer field, which looked peaceful when abandoned at night.

I let Lola lead me towards the field where we began to discard our clothes, making love out in the open, with only the occasional deer or bird as our witness.

It felt so private, out in the world, naked with the woman I loved beside me.

“I love you, Lola,” I said after we’d finished, both of us gasping for breath.

“I love you too, Daddy,” she said, a serene smile playing around her lips.

Above us, the moon was full and bright and the future felt full of possibilities.
