Chapter 8

Reinforcements

King

South Carolina…

I count to one hundred for the millionth time. Gutter or Sal should have reached out to me by now. Like I told Brick last night, I haven’t spoken to them since they first linked up.

Normally, I wouldn’t be wound this tight, but this is my sister. My baby sister at that. Sal has been through some shit.

She thinks I don’t know, but I’ve seen it in her eyes. Sal is just different from Eva. I know when and how to push both of them.

The look I saw in Sal’s eyes told me it wasn’t the time to push her. She’ll come to me when she’s ready for me to fix whatever it is. It’s her way, when she’s ready to deal with something she commits to the action.

I just want to know she’s safe. I don’t know what’s really going on. There’s always a chance I brought this bullshit to her door.

“I’ve given them until morning,” I grumble against Misty’s belly. “You and Brick said to give them until morning. Where the fuck are they?”

Misty sighs. “I don’t know. I don’t have a bad feeling, but maybe sending out some reinforcements isn’t a bad idea.”

“You’re fucking right I’m sending out reinforcements. Neither of them has answered a fucking phone in hours.” I sit up and run my hand through my dreads. “I have enough on my plate. Some fucked-up shit is going on around here. I can feel the disloyalty in the air.”

Misty sits up and looks at me with wide eyes. “You think someone set Sal up?” she gasps, reaching for her little belly. “A brother from the club?”

“That’s what we’re going to find out. Something ain’t right, something hasn’t been right in a long, long time.”

Misty licks her lips and nods. “Yeah, I guess you’re right. Remember you thought someone was tailing us a few months back? Shit, King. This is the last thing we need.”

“We… nah, baby girl, there’s no we. I will take care of all of this. You take care of my baby.” I narrow my eyes to make my point.

“King,” she whines.

“No,” I say firmly. “I need to call Grim and Reap. They’ll be able to meet up with Gutter and Sal the fastest. They can fly to them. You get some rest.” I lean forward and kiss her temple.

“I love you,” she whispers in that sweet voice.

“I love you too, baby.”
