Vicious Desire by Leslie V. Walker
Prologue
Ayanna
Four Years Ago…
“What’s going on? Why is everyone running?” I focus my attention back on Spencer as she maneuvers her way to the exit.
It’s three in the morning. What the hell is going on? “Spencer!”
We stop walking, her attention now focused on me. “We have to leave. A fire broke out and I heard gunshots only a few minutes ago. It’s not safe.”
Did I sleep through all of that?
“So, you broke into my cabin to save me?”
“Don’t flatter yourself, child. Everyone I care about is already safe, you were just one I couldn’t leave on my conscience.”
“Thank you?”
“You’re welcome.”
With her hand on my back, she shoves me forward, but I fight her. “Summaya! Where is she?” I can’t leave her behind. She has helped me get through this summer more than once.
“You haven’t heard?”
“Heard what?”
“She left about two hours ago; something about her mom.” Spencer grips my wrist, yanking me with her as we continue to walk to the exit.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“My guess is it’s none of your business.”
I glare at her back using all my strength to pull my wrist free and turn around. Though once I do, I immediately regret it, not just because of the flames increasing furiously which are heading our way. But because of the group of men dressed in black dragging someone. And the one guy who has stopped and pointed a gun at us.
At me.
