Killian

I was almost allthe way back to the bridge that led to Reject Island when a car slammed intomine.

The force knocked my head into the glass. For a moment, I was blinded. The world was a red blur as I fumbled for the door handle.

I threw it open, then scented Lucas in the nightair.

Shit.

I was excited to have the chance to beat the shit out of Lucas for what he did to Legacy. But if I never made it back, I had to let her know she needed to run. I called her quickly.

Fucking voicemail, just a blank disembodied voice saying she wasn’t available. My head spun as I waited until I could bark out, “Cyrus rammed my car. Run. Don’t go back toRI.”

I launched out of the car, shaking the blurriness out of my head. The memory of how Lucas slapped her made blood hum through my ears. This was my chance to make him suffer like he deserved. Legacy needed revenge.

Lucas finally emerged from the darkness, on the other side of the wreck.

“What do you want?” I growled, trying to keep him guessing about what I would do next. I slowly prowled around the front of the car, curious how close he’d let me get without a fight.

He wrenched open the passenger car door and peered inside. “Where’s Legacy?” he demanded as he turned to faceme.

That condescending prick had a look on his face like I owed him something.

And he was right, Idid.

I punched him across the face. He slammed against the car. As I moved to follow up that punch with another one or a dozen, he launched himself intome.

Lucas’s arms gripped me desperately, squeezing me impossibly tightly, forcing the breath from my lungs. He was impossibly strong. I slammed my fist into his side, over and over, trying to get his grip to break.

When I couldn’t breathe, Lucas smirked at me. He must’ve smirked like that at Legacy, too, and the fury that washed over me gave me a burst of energy. I slammed us both into the ground, landing on top of him, and struggled to get the best ofhim.

He must have vampire blood coursing through his veins. Maybe I could take him anyway.

Then cold, hard metal suddenly pressed to the back of my head, accompanied with the click of a safety.

“Ease back off my son,” Cyrus said, his voicedark.

I froze, raising my hands.

Lucas got up, and he grabbed my arm and yanked me up too. I started to take the opportunity the gun’s sites were off me to hit him, but the barrel dug between my shoulder blades.

For a second, the two of us stared at each other, Lucas’s eyes glinting with hatred and jealousy. Then he spat in my face. He hit me and I went down on my knee from the force of theblow.

Tobias screamed from inside the trunk.

Cyrus and Lucas looked at each other.

Great timing, vamp.

Lucas opened the trunk, which stuck from the accident. He struggled with it, then Cyrus marched over and ripped the trunk hatchoff.

Shit. He’d downplayed his power in front of the pack, even as he easily maintained his dominance. He was even stronger than we’d known. Vamp blood had given them superpowers.

I hadn’t fully believed the conspiracy until the two of them caught up to me. But there was no doubting their power was beyond any natural shifter.

“Tobias,” Lucas said, starting to grin as he saw the vampire.

“Keep the gun on him, moron,” Cyrus barked, and Lucas raised his handgun to keep it pointed in my direction.

Hopefully Legacy would get my SOS. They had to know at least that I wasn’t going to make it back to Reject Island, that the cavalry wasn’t coming to help them with Cyrus. Hopefully the three of them would keep running, find a place beyond pack lands to have a life together.

Cyrus raised his gun and pointed it at Tobias.

No, no, no. Not our witness.

“What’s that in your pocket?” Lucas demanded, striding towardme.

I took the chance to go for his gun, and the two of us wrestled for it briefly before Cyrus strode over and punched me across the face. I went down, and Lucas retrieved the phone from my pocket.

“He called someone. Probably Legacy,” Lucas said. “Too bad she doesn’t know where to find you, huh? Let’s send her an address. Make sure she can comehelp.”

Cyrus pulled the trigger, and Tobias’s brains splattered all over the back of thecar.

Then Cyrus turned toward me, murder in hiseyes.
