Good Boy by Megan Lowe

Chapter 34

“Hey, boyfriend,” Thomas says to me the next morning before kissing me, his tongue slipping into my mouth.

He pulls back, a massive smile on his face, and brushes the hair back from my forehead, cupping my face. “I dreamed about you last night.”

“Um, okay. That’s nice,” I say. While I’m glad Thomas is okay with what we’re doing, I guess I didn’t expect him to be so… enthusiastic about it.

He grabs my hand with his free one, threading our fingers together. “Yeah, it was a very good one.”

“Oh, that’s um, nice,” I say again. I’m not sure how to act here. Yes, we’re in a relationship, but it’s not real. It’s just for, you know, appearances, or whatever.

“I woke up hard as fuck,” he says. “And it’s all because of you.” He tugs me to him, grabbing my ass, and devouring my mouth. I swear he’s trying to taste what I had for breakfast with his kiss.

I push him away slightly. “Okay, let’s just pull it back a little,” I tell him.

He tilts his head. “Why?” He takes a step back. “Are you afraid to be seen with me? I thought we’re boyfriends, that we’re partners.”

I put my hand on his shoulder. “We are, I just think we should pair it back a little, you know, not go too hard, too fast.”

He nods. “Sorry. I just got carried away.”

“It’s fine,” I reassure him. The truth is it’s my own feelings that are fully preventing me from doing this whole way.

“So,” he says, resting an arm above my head, the other pulling my hand to wrap about his back, “I think we got off to a good start yesterday. I think we definitely got Cav’s attention.”

I think back to the scene he made in the cafeteria. I nod. “Yeah, I think we did too.”

“But we have to keep going,” he says. “It’s not enough to make him angry, we have to bring him down, destroy him, then set fire to the remains.”

“Ah….”

“We’re going to bring the great Cavanaugh McLaughlin down and it’s going to be awesome.”

“Are you all right?” I ask. I know Thomas is set on taking Cav down, I just didn’t realize he was this invested in it.

He pulls back a bit. “Of course, why wouldn’t I be?”

“It’s just, you seem a little… different, this morning.”

“It’s a beautiful day and I have a beautiful boyfriend who is helping me destroy my enemy, what’s so bad about that?”

“Nothing,” I say quickly. “It’s just, you’ve never talked like this before. And not that I’m not glad that you’re happy to be with me, but… well, you were straight up until the weekend.”

He cups my cheek. “Maybe it took that long to see what was right in front of me.”

“Um….”

He pulls back. “Are you sure this is what you want to do?” he asks. “I thought that we were on the same page, that we both wanted to take Cav down.”

“I just wanted him to leave me alone. You’re talking about something different all together.”

He waves a hand. “Leave you alone, take him down, they both result in the same thing.”

I shake my head. “No, they don’t.”

He takes another step back from me, his shoulders up, fists clenched. “Do you want to stop Cav or not?”

I take a small step closer to him, putting my hand on his chest. This side of Thomas is… well, it’s frightening. “Hey, calm down.”

He takes a breath.

“Good. Look, of course I want to stop Cav, but what you’re talking about, the way you’re talking about it? It’s a little scary to me.”

He blows out a breath and takes a step back. “Sorry, I just…. It’s been a long time coming, that’s all.”

“Look, I get this is something you’ve been wanting for a while, but let’s just take a breath and calm ourselves down, okay?”

He nods.

“Good. Like I said, I think we’re on the right track here, but let’s not push it, okay? We’re good, things are going good, they’re going to be good, let’s just take that and see where it goes.”

He nods again. “You’re right.” He blows out a breath. “I just… I want this so much, and being with you… it’s like nothing else.”

I chuckle. “Thanks.”

He cups my cheek. “We’re going to be great, Connor.”

“Yes, we are.”

The bell rings and he sighs. “I’ll see you later,” he says, giving me a kiss, before walking away.

Taking a seat in my homeroom, I blow out a breath. That was… unexpected. While I knew Thomas was committed to stopping Cav I guess I didn’t realize just how badly he wants it to happen.

My phone buzzes in my pocket. I pull it out and find a text from Kevin.

Kevin: Meet Friday. You’re up.

A message from Thomas comes in as someone sits down next to me.

Thomas: You get Kevin’s text? You’re up, baby, you’re gonna do so good! XO.

“XO?” Cav asks, obviously reading over my shoulder.

“Jealous?” I ask, ignoring the fact he’s not even in this class.

He nods. “You know I am.”

I shake my head. “Don’t tell me this shit, not when you can do something to change it.”

“Can I though?”

“If you wanted to.”

He shakes his head. “You make it sound so easy.”

“It could be.”

“No, it can’t.”

I sigh. “What do you want, Cav?” I ask. “As much as I love rehashing the same conversation over and over, it gets old.”

“Did you get my text?”

I hold up my phone. “I get a lot of texts.”

“Yeah, ending with a kiss and a hug.”

I roll my eyes. “Yes, Cav, I got your text.”

“And you’re still with him.”

“You’re still not willing to be with me.”

“Is that what it would take?” he asks. “Me to be with you for you to drop him?”

“Maybe. Or maybe I said that just to fuck with you.”

“You can fuck me anytime,” he says softly.

“Don’t say that shit when you know it’s not true,” I snap. “I’m with Thomas. He seems really into me, which is a pleasant change.”

He blows out a breath. “You like him?”

“Sure, he’s a nice guy.”

He nods and brushes a hand over his head. “You’re racing on Friday?”

“Someone wanted me to prove myself,” I remind him.

“That someone’s an idiot.”

“I know.”

He gives a wry chuckle. “Just be careful, okay? With Thomas and the race.”

“I will.”

“Good.” He taps the desk. “I’m sorry, you know, for everything.”

“I appreciate that.”

He gets up. “He’s still not the guy you should be with though.”

I shrug. “I can’t be with the one I want. That’s life, so you make the best of it.”

He nods and is out the door.
