CHAPTER 15:  Terry

Terry felt like he’d just fallen asleep when his doorbell rang. “Go away,” he shouted but it came out a raspy whisper. His throat was dry and he hurt everywhere—his head, his body, even his hair ached. He dropped back onto the pillow. Whoever was there would leave.

The doorbell rang again. He pulled the pillow over his head. It rang again and again and again.

“Fuck me.” He stood, swaying a bit as he staggered through his house. “No, fuck you.” He yanked open the door.

Maggie stared up at him, frowning. She looked great—clean and soft and she smelled fresh, unlike him who reeked of sweat.

“Oh, Terry.” The anger on her face faded as she stepped toward him, feeling his forehead. “You’re sick. You need to be in bed.” She grabbed his arm, her hand cool on his hot skin. “You’re burning up.” She took him to the couch. “Sit.”

“Bed.” He wanted to go to bed.

“No. I can’t take care of you here. I’m going to pack some clothes and you’re coming to my house.”

“No. I’m fine. I just need sleep.”

“You are not fine.” Her hands were on her hips and her breasts jiggled with the tapping of her foot. “You need water.” She touched his forehead again. “When was the last time you had something to drink?”

He shrugged. He had no idea.

“You’re coming with me.”

“No.” But she was already on her way to his room. He started to follow but dropped back onto the couch, stretching out. He was so fucking tired. “Need to sleep.” His eyes closed and it seemed like a second later she was tugging on his hand.

“Come on.”

“Go away,” he mumbled.

“You can sleep as soon as you get to my place.”

“I’m not going anywhere. Go home.” He couldn’t deal with her right now.

She blinked back tears and then straightened. “I came by to thank you for everything you did. David. The check. The additional child support and alimony.”

“No problem.” He closed his eyes. “Goodbye, Maggie. Have a nice life.”

She turned and hurried to the door, her footsteps making a soft pat on his carpet. He threw his arm over his face as the door closed. He was a bastard for hurting her like that but he couldn’t do it again. He’d never survive.
