CHAPTER 14:  Terry

Two days later, Terry stumbled into Ethan’s office.

“Hey.” Ethan looked up from his desk. “You look like shit.”

“I’m feeling a bit off.” He flopped onto the couch.

“Off? You’re green.” Ethan stood. “You need to go. I am not getting sick.”

“I’m not sick. I never get sick.”

“Well, buy a lottery ticket because never just arrived.” Ethan pointed to the door. “Go home. Come back when you’re not contagious.”

He stood, pulling Maggie’s check from his pocket. “Give this to Maggie for me.”

“No.” Ethan backed away as if Terry held a bomb. “I’m not taking anything that you touch. Go home.”

“Come on. She needs the money.”

“Mail it.”

“That’ll take days. I’ve had it too long already.” He’d forgotten about it until he’d checked his pockets before washing his jeans.

“Then, take it to her house.”

“I can’t.”

“Damnit, Terry.” Ethan pulled the front of his shirt over his face. “If I get sick, I’m gonna kick your ass.”

“Go ahead. I’d probably feel better.” He held out the check again. “Do this for me. I’ll owe you.”

“I don’t need anything except not to get sick. Take it to her yourself.”

He dropped back onto the couch. “I can’t. I can’t see her anymore.”

“Go away.”

“I’m not leaving until you agree to take this to Maggie.”

“Fuck you. Leave it on the table and go.”

“You’ll give it to her? Right away?”

“Yeah. I’ll give it to her now. I don’t want that diseased thing in my office any longer than it has to be.”

“Thanks.” Terry stood.

“Fuck you, patient zero.”

Terry left the check and went home to crawl into bed and die.
