My Arrogant Boss by Kylie King

Chapter Twenty-Six

FINN

I wasn’t sure what to expect Monday morning at the office, but I’d hoped Rachel would be there. She hadn’t answered or returned any of my calls after I checked her hotel room and found it empty.

And seeing as I had her address information from work, I was tempted to visit her, but I didn’t want to be that asshole who showed up unannounced, only to be demonized even more by a woman who already hated my guts.

So, I waited, and the waiting was pure torture.

But that morning, I got ready per usual and headed to the office, cruising in my Mercedes G-Class while thinking about all the ways I could get her to forgive me.

I told her I loved her, for Christ’s sake. I had never done that before. There was no way I could just let her walk away. For once, I was going to have to lower my guard and show her the real me, and that terrified me.

I parked in the private parking deck and took the VIP elevator up to the top floor. As soon as I stepped out, I noticed Audrey wasn’t sitting at her desk, which wasn’t normal for her on a Monday morning.

Ignoring the thought, I went to my office, but not without looking for Rachel at her desk. She wasn’t there either.

As I peeled out of my suit jacket and placed my briefcase on the desk, there was a small knock at the door behind me. I turned around, and Audrey was there, her lips pressed flat and a desolate look in her eyes.

“Good morning, Audrey,” I said. “Everything okay?”

“Yes, everything’s fine. Well…um, not really. I received an email this morning. From Rachel.”

My heart started being faster, but I remained cool and slid the tips of my fingers into my front pockets. “Okay…”

“She doesn’t want to come into work anymore. For personal reasons, I suppose. She said she left her two-weeks’ notice on your desk, but if she has to, she is willing to fulfill her time here for the two weeks remaining.”

“Uh…no. It’s fine,” I murmured. “She doesn’t have to come in anymore if she doesn’t want to. But count her hours for the next two weeks and make sure she’s paid for them.”

“Sir. Are you sure?”

“Yes, Audrey. I’m sure. Just do it.”

Audrey nodded and looked away. “Okay.” She turned away and walked out of the office, and as if she’d sensed that I needed a moment alone, she closed the door behind her. Audrey was the type to always ask whether someone wanted the door open or closed. Not today, and it made me wonder if she’d known something was sparking between Rachel and me too. She knew we’d gone to Vegas together. She sent Ariel my way—not purposely—but it happened, and perhaps she knew something had gone terribly wrong between Rachel and me in Vegas, thus proving it to be true to her.

Man. This wasn’t good.
