Mine to Take by Lila Fox

Chapter Eight

Zoe had a throbbing headache when she got off of work that next day, and she blamed most of it on Ms. Finch and her attitude. But part of it was the fact she couldn’t get the thought of Savage naked and on a bed out of her head.

The woman wouldn’t shut up about Savage, and she threatened more than once to have Zoe fired if she had a relationship with him.

Zoe knew there wasn’t a damn thing the woman could do and had finally told her that if she tried to fire her, she’d go to the town’s councilmen and sue her for discrimination. The woman had shut up for a bit but then went right back at it.

Zoe had a hidden fear that Ms. Finch could actually take her job, and she didn’t know what to do about it.

She jolted and pressed a hand to her heart when she spied Savage lying on the sofa like he’d done the day before.

“I’m definitely getting a heavy-duty lock for that door.”

He had one hand behind his head and his other hand on his stomach as he smirked at her. “Like that would keep me out.”

“I thought I told you to come later?”

“Um … yeah. I don’t really do well with people telling me what to do.”

She sighed. “That’s good to know. It might change some things between us,” she told him and arched a brow.

“Babe, cut the attitude. You don’t want to mess with me right now. If I were you, I’d go and shower.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “And if I don’t?”

She was a little nervous when the light of challenge and some kind of satisfaction came into his eyes before he smiled. It wasn’t a nice one either. She thought he looked like what she thought an alligator would before they pounced.

She took a hasty step backward when he sat up abruptly.

“If that’s what you want, me to show you the consequences, I’m more than up for them.”

She squealed, turned, and rushed off when he went to stand.

“Good choice, babe,” he yelled from the living room.

She almost yelled back something sarcastic but knew she’d already pushed him enough. After she raced through a shower, she got dressed. Her hair had stayed dried since she’d had it pinned up for work, so she brushed through that quickly until it lay in a long black curtain down her back. She added some eyeshadow, lip gloss, and mascara, then stood back and looked in the mirror before getting dressed.

She was just buttoning her shirt when he said something behind her.

“What are you wearing?” he said from behind her.

She jumped and then scowled at him over her shoulder. “I’m going to put a bell on you.”

He looked surprised. “Why?”

“So, I can hear when you’re coming.”

He grinned. “Not going to happen, babe. What’s with the outfit?”

She looked down at herself. “What? I’m wearing nice jeans and a shirt. You said it was a barbeque, right?”

“Yeah, it is. You just look dressy.”

“In jeans?”

“Yeah, and the nice blouse.”

“Do you want me to change?”

“No, you look beautiful.”

Something inside of her softened. “Thank you. You’re looking hot.”

He laughed. “Thank you.”

“Am I coming back here tonight?”

“No. You’ll be with me all weekend. I’ll bring you back on Sunday.”

She swallowed. Was she ready for this step with him? Although she couldn’t really answer that, she wasn’t going to give up this chance to spend time with him and learn more about him. “Then I should pack a bag.”

“A small one,” he said.

Ten minutes later, they stood outside the back of her house as she stared at his bike. “I’ve never ridden on one of these.”

“You’ll love it.”

She watched him strap her bag to the back of his bike before he got on and reached for her.

“Press against my back and put your arms around my waist.”

“Okay.”

He glanced at her. “Trust me, babe. I won’t ever let anything happen to you.”

Damn him. The jerk kept doing things and making her feel stuff she’d never felt before, and she knew she could fall in love with him very easily. That was probably not a good idea because he wouldn’t ever do something like that, and her heart would break.

“What are you thinking, babe?”

She mentally shook herself and smiled. “Nothing. I’m putting my trust in you.”

He nodded. “Good.”

He started the bike, and the vibrations startled her. She hadn’t realized it would feel like this.

“Hold on,” he said, and they started off.

Her arms tightened around his waist, and she bit back the squeal that wanted to burst from her mouth.

Ms. Finch’s face popped up in her head, and she shook it off. She wasn’t going to worry about her this weekend. She just wanted to enjoy being with him because it might be the only time she had with him.
