CHAPTER 4: Terry
When Terry woke it took him a minute to realize where the hell he was. He sat up, running his hand down his face as he crawled out of bed. He pulled his wallet from his pocket to double check. Ethan would fire anyone who stole from a client but it had happened.
His credit cards were still there and some money, but not much. He glanced at the table. The cash was gone. He had no idea how much he’d given Desiree, but he’d leave more for her downstairs. She deserved a small fortune for listening to his shit last night.
He grimaced as his gaze landed on the bottle of scotch. If he were younger and more naïve, he’d swear he’d never drink again but that wasn’t going to happen. Although, it would be a while. He stumbled to the bathroom and turned on the shower and then turned it off. He had to get home. He’d forgotten about Beast.
He was halfway home when his phone beeped. There was a message from Ethan and a message from Maggie. How the hell had he missed that?
MAGGIE: Can you come over?
“Fuck.” He could’ve been with her instead of limp-dicked and drunk. He stepped on the gas. Her kids wouldn’t be home until this afternoon. They had time, plenty of time.
He slowed down as he pulled into his neighborhood. Even though he wanted to get home, shower and go see Maggie, there were too many children around to speed down these streets. He turned the corner, his eyes drifting over a little girl. She looked a lot like Maggie’s daughter. His foot slammed on the brake as Maggie’s ex came out of the house, carrying the baby and ushering his other son along.
A woman followed him. It was Stephanie Templar. She stared at his car.
He’d been caught gawking. He put it in park and stepped out of his car. “Stephanie?”
“Terry?” She smiled and headed toward him. The man trailing after her. “I haven’t seen you in ages.”
“I’ve been busy.” His eyes drifted to the guy. It was Maggie’s ex. He’d seen the man through the window when David had picked up the kids. “Looks like you have been too.”
“David. David Givens.” Maggie’s ex shifted the baby to his other arm and held out his hand.
Terry want to punch the guy in the face. They lived here and Maggie and this man’s kids had to move to Southshore. He steadied his nerves and shook the man’s hand.
“You live around here?” asked David.
“Down the street.” Where I banged your ex-wife and showed her what it was like having a real man between her legs.
“Terry used to come to the homeowner’s meetings but he’s been absent for months.” Stephanie laughed. “I thought you moved.”
Only far enough to avoid her obvious attempts at flirtation. “Nope. Just very busy.”
“Terry’s a lawyer.”
“Oh. Nice. I own my own investment company,” said David.
“My husband’s very successful.” She clung to David’s arm. “Give him a card.”
David nodded and pulled a card from his pocket, offering it to Terry. “You should give me a call.”
“Thanks.” He accepted the card. “I’ll be in touch.” He’d definitely be looking into this guy. “I have to run but it was nice seeing you, Stephanie and nice meeting you, David.” He strode back to his car.
His mind spun as he drove down the street. Stephanie might have been lying about David’s success, but she wasn’t a fool. She wouldn’t tie herself to a man with no money. She was rich, richer than rich, but she understood that money married money. That meant, something wasn’t right with David’s finances and he was going to get to the bottom of it.
