Vicious Desire by Leslie V. Walker

Chapter Fourteen

Ayanna

I pack my bag quickly and head out of the classroom, meeting up with Jason to head to lunch.

I approach him as everyone scatters around, I take out my phone seeing a few notifications on Facebook including a friend request from Spencer, but I ignore it not wanting to get into it.

A frown forms on my lips and I wonder why the hell do I feel like I’m missing something. “Darlin’, why so glum?” Jason asks taking in my frown.

“I’m not…”

“Is this about the dance and not having a date?” He tilts his head.

“What? No. I’m not even going.” I decided yesterday I wasn’t going to go even with a gun to my head.

“I’ll be there.” He says shoving an Edgar Allen Poe book filled with poems in his bag.

Jason’s fascination with poetry is what drew me to him in the first place. I always loved how he talked about it with pure admiration. His pupils would dilate, and his face would shine with anything poetry.

I never planned on going to the dance in the first place, so in the end, it’s a win-win. I’m about to tell him exactly this, when all of a sudden chatter falls silent as we enter the cafeteria.

I look up to see everyone forming a circle with phones drawn out faced toward me. Wide smiles on their faces as a few people squeal in excitement. I could barely process what’s going on before I read the sign in front of me.

Ayanna Wilson, would you do me the honors of heading to the dance with me? - Neo

“Holy shit,” Jason mummers from my left, containing a chuckle.

The whole school awaits my answer as I try to process what the hell is going on. Why would Neo ask me to the dance when we’ve never once spoken to one another?

Neo holds the sign in the middle of the circle with mischief in his eyes and a grin as if he knows what he’s doing. Word has traveled around school that I was going to the dance with Brendan, so the fact he’s doing this means he’s not caring at all for what may happen when Brendan finds out.

A shiver runs down my spine as my body tenses even more. I feel a pair of eyes watching my every move and as if I can seek him out, I do. I tilt my head to the side and see as he and his friends sit in a table watching the hallmark display.

Our eyes lock, his filled with rage he can barely contain in him, Gunner as a hand on his shoulder making sure he doesn’t get up. The former watches me with interest in what I’ll do next, deny Neo and go with Brendan or accept and choose the danger.

My heart speeds up, accelerating with the knowledge everyone is waiting for my answer. I push my bag further up my shoulder nervously wondering what to do.

I wasn’t planning on going to the dance at all after Saturday night nor was, I ever planning on going with Neo. He gives off this weird vibe every time he stares at me. I feel like he’s secretly plotting my murder or something.

Whatever it is though, I want to know. Because the guy’ do have a mole and this weird feeling is right it could be him. Besides saying yes will be my little fuck you to Brendan.

It’s just a dance, where most likely he’ll leave me first thing as we walk through the doors. Nothing should go wrong.
